  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Wagner -- Everything You Thought You Knew About the Magna Carta Is Wrong! Outstanding Explanation of What it Is and Isn't : Most of us know something about the Magna Carta. In loose terms, we think of it as a legal, written, promise forced at swordpoint from the evil King John in 1215 by courageous barons who were early champions of civil liberties, creating democratic rights for all and providing legal, enforceable, limits on the actions of the Crown; a document that led to our own Constitution. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tru Review -- Two thumbs up for Magna Carta in 20 Places!!! Excellent!! : Let me start off with the admission that I am a history buff. I am fascinated with history from all around the world. I had learned about the Magna Carta during my school days, but never read any books covering the subject. When I saw this book by Derek J. Taylor, entitled "Magna Carta in 20 Places", it intrigued me. What was there about the Magna Carta that I didn't know? Well apparently a lot! The author certainly has a way with words as he describes scenes to the point that I can see what he is describing in my mind's eye! I also found that much of what I was taught about Magna Carta was wrong and mostly just a myth. Mr. Taylor gives factual presentation to the story as it unfolds, not holding anything back as he describes the people involved regarding their perceived and factual personalities and behaviors. Mr. Taylor has opened up chapters of English and American history that are unknown to the average American. The author takes the reader to significant places in the world in order to tell the story of the Magna Carta as well as the impact this document had in those various places, including the United States where it was used to help author the Bill of Rights. Mr. Taylor takes the reader from England to Israel, France, Jamestown and Washington DC with fascinating stories to keep you wanting to know more. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tony Percy -- History Made Lively : This is a very lively and informative book, which takes a highly original approach to exploring the facts behind the mythology of Magna Carta, evidenced by the author's recording of his personal experiences in visiting twenty places associate with it. Derek Taylor writes with tremendous verve about the iconic but highly misunderstood document. He has a very respectful but analytical ear for historical truth, to the extent that it is ever revealed accurately in official documents and contemporary accounts, and balances it with a journalist's sharp eye for today's physical world. He has been slightly let down by his publisher, who sadly did not ensure that the legend on his map corresponds to the chapter titles identifying the places, and I would have liked to see a bibliography. No doubt these issues will be addressed in the forthcoming paperback edition. But it's a wonderfully entertaining account for anybody - especially those whose impression of the Charter may have been coloured by romanticised schoolboy lessons or by pious hyperbole from politicians. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rev. A. J. Bawtree -- If you buy just one book on the Great Charter this year make it this one. : An engaging read with a narrative and geographical take on the advent of the Magna Carta and the impact that it has made down through the centuries and across the globe. Living a stone's throw from the village of Temple Ewell and a vested interest in the Church in England being free I highly commend this book as we celebrate 800 years since it was first written in the presence of King John. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jackson -- Lots of detail so you need to be really interested in this type of history to persevere with it : Very interesting but a little too detailed for me. Lots of information not explained at school thereby not explaining the real reason for the Magna Carta. I was in the US whilst reading this and couldn’t find a person who had heard of it 😂 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2019 )
